デイサービスの利用者の中に、ある婦人会の元会長で、認知症になってしまった人がいた。そのおばあちゃんは週に2、3回、施設に通って来ており、いつもその男性を見てたという。そして、草むしりも何もしない彼を3ヵ月ほど見てきたおばあちゃんは、ある日ご飯を食べているときに突然、男性の前で机をバンと叩いた。
「あんた、若いのに、しっかりしろ！」
男性は、驚いてきょとんとした。すると、おばあちゃんが、彼の手を取って、散歩に連れて歩くようになった。
以来、おばあちゃんは、何かと男性の手を取って「この若い青年を1人前にしないといけない」と、言い続けた。
「もともとこのおばあちゃんは、“会長”を務めた経験があるくらい、世話好きの親分肌。そういう役割を活用できる場所がなくなって、認知症になったようなんです。ここに来たら、自分を必要としている青年がいた。どんどん感情が引き出されたのか、お化粧、身なり、髪などもきれいになって、相乗効果で認知症も治ってしまったんです」（武田さん）
